Rochester Raccoon Control Tip: What Are the Mating Habits of a Raccoon?
For those who find wildlife fascinating, there is nothing more interesting than the mating habits of different animals. Some species are more amorous in their relationship, like the swan, while others are almost like a one-night stand.
The raccoon is an animal that has an unusual pattern, primarily because many, but not all, raccoons hibernate. This means that the time frame to mate is limited before it is time to head back into hibernation.
Preparing to Mate
While some raccoons do hibernate, the time of mating for these critters is actually quite extensive. Males will begin to prepare for mating starting in January and will continue to do so through March.
When a male is preparing to mate, they become quite restless. This includes wandering outside of their normal living area as they began to search for a female who will be their partner. While a raccoon may wander quite a distance from its habitat, it is also careful to ensure that it does not encroach upon another male's territory.
A Short Duration in Time to Mate
The normal according period for a male is somewhere between three to four days. After the four-day period is over, the female is ready to mate for the purpose of conception.
The female begins to make herself available to the male for a number of successive nights. This can last for several nights in a row as conception often does not occur right away. It is interesting because the mating process can last for as long as an hour each time. Much of this time is spent on a ritualized form of foreplay that takes up the majority of the mating time. After the first sexual encounter, the mail will remain with the female during the entire duration of the mating period. When they wake up each day, they venture out together to forage for food. When they returned to the nesting area, they begin the first of their sexual encounters for the day.
Surprisingly, there is a certain amount adoration that the male has for the female. He can actually be quite loving toward her, as he takes care of her and ensures that her daily needs are taken care of. You wouldn't expect to see this in a raccoon, but it is part of the ritual.
All Get Their Shot
No matter how powerful or weak or raccoon may be in terms of physical size and strength, all will have the chance for mating. There are usually far more females in an area than there are males, meaning that the weaker males are given an opportunity to impregnate a female.
Interesting Facts about Raccoons
In many instances, the female will lose her offspring long before the birth. If this should happen, the female is able to conceive roughly 100 days later.
The gestation period for a raccoon is about nine weeks. Most female raccoons have a litter of somewhere between two and five babies, known as kits. It depends upon the region, but the average size of a litter in the northern part of North America is near five per litter. When temperatures are lower, it is common for litters to exceed eight or nine kits.
