The raccoon is an animal that has an unusual pattern, primarily because many, but not all, raccoons hibernate. This means that the time frame to mate is limited before it is time to head back into hibernation. 

Preparing to Mate
While some raccoons do hibernate, the time of mating for these critters is actually quite extensive. Males will begin to prepare for mating starting in January and will continue to do so through March.

When a male is preparing to mate, they become quite restless. This includes wandering outside of their normal living area as they began to search for a female who will be their partner.
